"A hilarious musical melodrama!" raves LA Parent. An Our Times "Best Bet!" It's the heart-warming rhythm and boos musical comedy that offers great audience interaction as they boo the villain and cheer the heroine in the true spirit of the American Melodrama.
It's a little-known fact that Annie Oakley was a champion for equality and women's rights as far back as 1898 - a friend to the downtrodden and a role model for women everywhere! And now the legendary heroine is back, coming to the aid of a single mom and her daughters struggling to find a balance between the temptations of modern living and the comforting roots of tradition. Should Annie's Place, passed down through the generations of women in Kat's family, become the new-fangled, modernized Princess Cafe? That's exactly what wealthy land-owner Marvin Q. Moneypots wants! But is the "out with the old, in with new" Moneypots mentality the right one? Should Princesses replace Cowgirls? Or is there a way to unite the old and the new? Audiences ages 2 to 102 help Annie, Kat and her girls hold their own against smarmy villain Marvin Q. Moneypots, and create a whole new family tradition. Birthday and Tea Parties, hosted by one of the gaily costumed Playhouse actors are available in conjunction with every performance.
Based on a short story by Emery Bernauer, and written and directed by Chris DeCarlo & Evelyn Rudie with lyrics and music by E. Rudie, Annie Oakley and the Princess Cafe features Actors' Repertory Theatre company members Tiffany Haile, Sarai Jimenez, Chelsey Maus, Cydne Moore, Elena Rust and Bradley Sharper. The production, one of 16 original fairy tales that are part of the Santa Monica Playhouse Family Theatre Musical Matinee Series, cuts across the imaginary generation gap by providing an experience that the entire family can enjoy. LA Times calls it "Highly enjoyable." Come see for yourself, y'all. Sat 2pm, Sun 12:30, Jan 14-March 25, 2018. Returns by audience demand after it's sell-out 2017 run!

"Our daughter learned more about drama in one week with SMP than in all the productions she's ever done - put together. We're absolutely ecstatic!" raves educator J. Dohr. "I am continuously impressed! The workshops and plays are structured so that every child can be successful!" raves B. Clough. Daily Variety calls it, "One of the best in the country!" No small parts - no playing the second tree or third spear carrier - no double or triple casting - every child receives a role written specifically for them, based on their creative input, highlighting their strengths and challenging them to excel in all theatre skills, including performance and stage technique, teamwork, self-confidence, creative expression and communication, projection and enunciation, as well as reading and language comprehension, theatre etiquette, and a true love of and appreciation for theatre arts. And small classes mean lots of personal attention for every member of the class.
Enrollment is open for all Spring sessions of this ever popular workshop program, now in its 49th year, a fun experience that helps students expand their imagination as they act, sing, dance, play theatre games, improvise, work with costumes and make-up, lighting and sound, sets and props, and perhaps best of all, collaborate with professional playwrights and directors to create an awesome fully staged original production with music, written just for them. No experience needed, but even the most advanced young actor will benefit from this workshop.
Classes meet weekly, Thursday afternoons or Saturday mornings, February through May. Ask about Spring Break and Summer Theatre Camps, the Summer England Theatre Adventure for ages 12 and up, and workshops for adults, too!
Playhouse conservatory alumni include Kate Hudson, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Deschanel, Jason Ritter, Jason Segel, Obi Ndefo, Shana Feste, Rina Mimoun, Cami Anderson (Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World) and Maroon 5's Mickey Madden, who calls the program "Great in so many ways!"
Santa Monica Playhouse is proud to be an approved program on LAArtsEd.org, Los Angeles County's one-stop-shop for quality arts education programs.
